THE ORGAN OF THE CHURCH OF MENESTEROL
St Peter's church of Ménestérol was built in 12th century in the romanesque style. From that time the west front has exixted as well as its portal with its four semicircular arches. The nave, rebuilt in the 15th century is encumbered with an imposing pillar sustaining a vault with intersecting ribs. The choir is covered with 18th century panelling originating in the Carthusian Monastery of Vauclaire. Two small chapels were added in the 17th century. It is protected as an ancien monument.
Francis Chapelet and the Association were in search of a concert instrument for this church. They salvaged the organ from St. Matthew's Temple at Colmar which was stored on the gallery after a fire. The case, the GO's windchest, a few mechanical elements and the front pipes were exixting. This instrument had been built by the organ builder V.Rinckenbach in 1842 (It had 23 stops at the outset).
After its restoration, this reassembling and decoration in the choir, this case was equipped with a new instrumental part the realization of which was G.Grenzing's work in 1980 and 1982.
On both sides of the console, Roger Chapelet, Francis's father and Official Painter of the French Navy, painted two pictures representing a pond of the Double on the left and the church of Ménestérol on the right.
In 2002, Francis Chapelet revived the case decoration with a polychromy (painting in imitation of marble and gildings) and with the addition of a tiara at the top and of two sculptured and foil gilt "checks".
2006 J.F. Dupont assisted some persons of the Association made a thorough cleaning of the organ as well an overhaul of the mechanics. A "Dolzian 8' " filled the place of the small "Régale" of the choirorgan keyboard.
